Gyumri: Seeking “Tuff” Solutions to Domiks Problem

Students from the University of Virginia have embarked on a project to design new homes for residents of Gyumri’s domiks. In 1988, a powerful earthquake devastated Gyumri, Armenia’s second largest city, killing thousands of people and leaving many more homeless. Following the disaster, temporary shelters, known as “domiks,” were built in Gyumri to house residents. Today, nearly three decades later, many people still live in the improvised, run-down shacks. The “Tuff Armenia” team wants to solve the problem.
