Armenia’s Insurance Foundation for Servicemen, also known as the “1,000 Drams Fund,” will extend its financial support to servicemen and families of wounded or deceased soldiers who have served after 2016.
Until now, the foundation provided monetary compensation to the families of soldiers as well as to soldiers injured or fallen in combat on or after January 1st, 2017 .
It insures the social wellbeing of soldiers injured while on active duty as well as that of the families of soldiers who died while performing their duties.
Every employed person in Armenia, by giving 1000 drams ($2) from their salary to the Foundation, contributes to this program.
During a government session on August 9, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan touched upon the idea of compensating the victims and the families of the 2016 April War.
“There have been many discussions concerning this law, that the victims of the April War were not beneficiaries of this law. Thus, we will solve this issue,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Background:
The April War began along the Nagorno-Karabakh line of contact on 1 April 2016 with the Nagorno Karabakh Defense Army, backed by the Armenian Armed Forces, on one side and the Azerbaijani Armed Forces on the other. Overall, more than 100 servicemen and civilians were killed on the Nagorno Karabakh side during the four days in April. Azerbaijan has not published clear statistics of its losses.
