The Making of the Velvet Revolution

Amid a growing rise in authoritarianism around the world, in 2018, Armenia shocked the world with a peaceful transfer of government. Nikol Pashinyan, then an opposition parliament deputy, initiated a “walking protest” against the election then-President Serzh Sargsyan to the post of prime minister. The walk quickly turned into rallies and mass demonstrations, culminating in what is known as the “velvet revolution”.
