Another Armenian Killed in Kesab

On May 11, Vartan Anderian, originally from the village of Karadouran was killed in a mortar attack near Chalma in Kesab. According to CivilNet’s sources in Latakia, Anderian was immediately killed in the attack near a spring called Chalma by Karadouran village in Kesab. Saro Apoian, another Armenian, was wounded in the attack.

On March 21, armed anti-government forces crossed the Syrian border from Turkey and attacked the historic Armenian town of Kesab. On the same day, 600 Armenian families fled to Latakia, a city 65 kilometers from Kesab to find refuge. Several dozen people remained in the Armenian town following the attack. During the first week there was no news from those left behind or who chose to remain in Kesab until April 7 when more than 21 people, most of them elderly, were heard to be found near the Turkish border. They were later moved, against their will, to the last remaining Armenian village in Turkey – the village of Vakif in Musaler.
