Another Armenian Woman Attacked in Istanbul Apartment

An elderly Armenian woman living in Istanbul’s Ferikoy district was attacked on Saturday, August 17, 2013, the newspaper “Agos” reports. Markirit Camkosoglu, who is almost 80, was brutally assaulted in the apartment where she lives alone.

Camkosoglu said that on August 17, on returning to her apartment building from the bazaar, she encountered a “dark, ugly” person, who she thought was going to go upstairs like herself. When she opened her door, the man pushed her inside, knocked her to the floor and beat her violently. He didn’t speak, but stole 70 Turkish Lira ($36). She added that “I’ve been living here for 50 years but nothing like this has happened [before].”

In an interview with “Agos” journalist Uygar Gultekin, Camkosoglu’s family said they have not gone to the police because they have no hope that an investigation would yield any result. Camkosoglu is in a state of shock. She is being taken care of at home.

Neighbors think that the attacker was aware that Camkosoglu lived alone and timed the attack to coincide with her shopping trip.

This is the fourth attack on an elderly Armenian women in a Armenian-populated district of Istanbul within the past nine months. The alleged murderer of Maritsa Kucuk, Murat Nazaryan, said in court last week that he does not remember anything about the murder. More on the Nazaryan case

There were two more attacks on elderly Armenian women in Samatya and nearby Bakirkoy in January.
