Dr. Artyom Tonoyan is a sociologist researching religion and politics in the South Caucasus at the University of Minnesota.
In a conversation with CivilNet, Tonoyan says he believes that Azerbaijan is initiating skirmishes to try and keep Armenia in continuous instability. And, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev uses this turmoil to solidify his power base in his own country.
Tonoyan also explains why a large-scale war is unlikely within the sovereign territory of Armenia.
Georgia’s parliament approved the first reading of a bill on “foreign agents” this week, sparking protests in the capital Tbilisi. The proposed law would require media outlets and non-profit organizations that receive over 20% of their funding from abroad to register as entities influenced by foreign sources.
