Dual Education-Guaranteed Employment! IT

Over the past several years vocational education and training (VET) has attracted broad international interest, becoming a key model for advancing personal, economic and social capacities and skills in many countries. VET also plays an important role in enabling young people to enter the labour market and ensuring promotion of skills relevant for a country’s economic development. It’s already three years that GIZ, working on behalf of the German Government, has been piloting dual education in the Armenian VET sector through Private Sector Development and Technical Vocational Education and Training in the South Caucasus (PSD TVET) Programme, in cooperation with Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of Armenia. Dual education is currently piloted in wine, tourism, IT and precision engineering sectors. Dual system, one of the most promising models of work-based learning, gives students an excellent opportunity to learn the theory in the classroom and simultaneously acquire relevant practical skills at a private sector company. Thus, dual system hinges upon involvement of the private sector in vocational education processes, ensuring close collaboration with the educational institutions to develop curricula relevant for the labour market needs. In 2019, GIZ through the PSD TVET Programme supported the Armenian Government’s Work Armenia Initiative to contribute to continuous improvement of human life quality through employment and professional development. Within the cooperation, among other support activities, 4 films have been produced. The short films feature the process of introduction of dual system in wine, tourism, IT and precision engineering sectors in Yerevan, Shirak, Lori, Vayots Dzor and Tavush regions of Armenia, through personal stories of students as well as experiences and insights from public and private partners. They stress the importance of already formed labour market- education ties as well as present entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for students in future. In this short film, students, teachers, public and private sector representatives themselves present their stories and experiences of dual system piloting in IT.
