Ererouyk: Preserving an Armenian architectural masterpiece

Gaianè Casnati, a member of Europa Nostra pan-European federation for cultural heritage, and Emma Harutyunyan, Associate Professor at the National University of Architecture and Construction of Armenia, sat down with CivilNet on the sidelines of the Armenian Society of Fellows conference in Dilijan, Armenia, to discuss the preservation of Ererouyk in Armenia’s Shirak Region. The archeological site, which won a European Heritage Award (Europa Nostra Award) in 2023, is one of the earliest surviving Christian monuments in Armenia, and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in 1995. Casnati and Harutyunyan discuss why Ererouyk is a unique example of Armenian architecture, and the various efforts to restore and preserve the site. 

Casnati and Harutyunyan also invite watchers to vote in Europa Nostra’s 2023 Public Choice Award, where Ererouyk is also participating. The winner will be announced at the European Heritage Awards Ceremony on 28 September 2023 in Venice, and will receive a monetary prize of €10.000.
