The trial against the Azerbaijani soldier accused of murdering an Armenian civilian in southern Armenia in April will begin on Friday, the Prosecutor General’s Office said. Azerbaijani Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva visited the two Armenian soldiers allegedly abducted from Armenian territory last month. Gayane Hakobyan, who lost her son in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and stands accused of trying to kidnap Ashot Pashinyan, was taken back into custody hours after a court ordered her to be freed from pre-trial detention and placed under house arrest.
The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan will meet in Washington next week for another round of peace talks. Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said that Armenia “has no right” to negotiate on the future status of Nagorno-Karabakh. Armen Grigoryan, the head of Armenia’s Security Council, said Yerevan may sign a peace deal with Baku by the end of the year. By Mark Dovich The Russian company that owns Sotk, Armenia’s largest gold mine, said last week it had indefinitely suspended open-pit operations at the site, citing shelling from Azerbaijan. “Further work at the Sotk open pit has become impossible due to circumstances beyond the company’s control,” GPM Gold was quoted as saying last week by Sputnik Armenia. The company said that more than 700 people who work at the mine had been placed on unpaid leave. By Mark Dovich Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will attend newly reelected Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s inauguration Saturday in Ankara, marking the first visit by an Armenian leader to the country in over a decade. “Armenia received an invitation to participate in the inauguration ceremony of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan,” Pashinyan’s office said in a short statement Friday to the Armenpress news agency.
