Կարդալ ավելինArmenia’s National Security Service reported yesterday that Azerbaijani forces had advanced 100-300 meters into Armenia’s sovereign territory near the village of Aravus in Armenia’s southernmost Syunik region. That came after agreements reached last August to change the route of the Lachin corridor, which connects Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. CivilNet’s Syunik team traveled to Aravus to speak to local residents about the situation.
AUA College of Humanities and Social Sciences has organized a panel discussion entitled “Towards the Centennial of the Turkish Republic: Imperial Continuities and Ruptures.” 2023 marks the centennial of the establishment of the Turkish Republic, and it is also a year of general elections within the context of regional and international turmoil. The panel will look at socio-political and historical trends that have shaped and continue to shape modern Turkey. Speakers of the panel are:Dr. Cengiz Aktar, Professor, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Hrant Dink Visiting Fellow; Dr. Vahram Ter-Matevosyan, AUA Associate Professor; Dr. Varak Ketsemanian, AUA Adjunct Lecturer. Azerbaijani forces have blocked the Goris-Stepanakert highway, between the villages of Aghavno and Tegh, in the early hours of this morning. Nagorno-Karabakh’s Interior Ministry reported today that a new road between Tegh and Kornidzor, which bypasses the closed road, and then connects to the new Kornidzor-Hin Shen road, which started operating in August 2022, is ready for operations. Andrea Wiktorin, the head of the European Union Delegation to Armenia, sat down with CivilNet’s Emilio Cricchio to discuss the EU’s recently deployed civilian mission to the Armenian side of the border with Azerbaijan. Wiktorin explained the purpose of the mission, as well as some of the nuances around the mission’s deployment, including its ability to coexist with Russian entities in Armenia. Ambassador Wiktorin also talked about what Brussels is doing to de-escalate tensions between Yerevan and Baku.

By Mark Dovich Armenia joined India and Mexico Wednesday to sign on to a U.S. pro-democracy declaration while making reservations over a paragraph condemning Russia’s war in Ukraine. In a press release, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s office said it had refused to endorse a paragraph “demand(ing) that Russia immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw” from Ukraine because it “does not reflect all conflicts and crises in (a) comprehensive and inclusive manner and fails to address the fact of Azerbaijan’s acts of aggression” against Armenia. “Many Armenians believe there’ll be a spring offensive by Azerbaijan.
