The trial against the Azerbaijani soldier accused of murdering an Armenian civilian in southern Armenia in April will begin on Friday, the Prosecutor General’s Office said. Azerbaijani Ombudsperson Sabina Aliyeva visited the two Armenian soldiers allegedly abducted from Armenian territory last month. Gayane Hakobyan, who lost her son in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war and stands accused of trying to kidnap Ashot Pashinyan, was taken back into custody hours after a court ordered her to be freed from pre-trial detention and placed under house arrest.

By Mark Dovich The Russian company that owns Sotk, Armenia’s largest gold mine, said last week it had indefinitely suspended open-pit operations at the site, citing shelling from Azerbaijan. “Further work at the Sotk open pit has become impossible due to circumstances beyond the company’s control,” GPM Gold was quoted as saying last week by Sputnik Armenia. The company said that more than 700 people who work at the mine had been placed on unpaid leave. The owner of Sotk, Armenia’s largest gold mine, indefinitely suspended operations due to cross-border fire from Azerbaijan. Armenia will appoint trade representatives to China, Germany, and the United States, more than doubling the country’s number of commercial envoys overseas.
