Yerevan pushes back against Islamic bloc’s “Western Azerbaijan” claim

  • Most Armenians believe peace with Azerbaijan is impossible, survey shows

By Alexander Pracht A total of 68.5% of Armenians do not believe normalization with Azerbaijan is possible, according to a survey by the Yerevan-based Arar Foundation published on Friday. The phone poll was conducted between May 8 and June 5 and included 1,071 respondents from both urban and rural areas of the country. A roughly similar proportion, 62.8%, believe that the issue of Karabakh is not closed, and see a realistic prospect of peace only after it is fully resolved, despite Azerbaijan having gained full control over the region in September 2023 and driving virtually every ethnic Armenian from their […]

  • Pashinyan says Armenia’s power grid nationalization plan ready amid crackdown

By Lia Avagyan Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on June 24 that the government has finalized a plan to nationalize the country’s main power distribution company, the Electricity Networks of Armenia (ENA). “The nationalization plan for the Electricity Networks of Armenia is ready,” Pashinyan wrote on Facebook. “We will soon move into the implementation phase. The process will proceed in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Armenia.” The announcement comes amid a sharp political standoff between the government and Russia-based Armenian billionaire Samvel Karapetyan, whose Tashir Group acquired ENA in 2015. Islamized Armenians in Syria: A Hidden Diaspora Reemerges

Dr. Karena Avedissian, political scientist and researcher, shares insights from her recent visit to the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, also known as Rojava—a trip made possible with the support of the Gulbenkian Foundation. There, she met with Islamized Armenians, descendants of Genocide survivors who were forcibly assimilated during and after 1915. She explains how this hidden diaspora is now reemerging and reclaiming its Armenian identity through community, language, and armed self-defense, all within Rojava’s inclusive, multi-ethnic political system. Avedissian discusses the challenges they face, from rejection by the Armenian Church to the ongoing threat of Turkish aggression, […]

  • Armenian NGOs demand ban of Russian state TV

By Alexander Pracht A coalition of Armenian non-governmental organizations issued a joint statement Monday, reacting to a recent broadcast on Russian state television in which prominent presenter Vladimir Solovyov made offensive remarks about Armenia’s leadership, using slurs and questioning whether Armenians have any say in their country’s future. “Given that Russia-1 is a state broadcaster and Solovyov is a key Kremlin propagandist, his comments likely reflect the stance of Russian authorities, and they have not been denied in the days since the broadcast,” the NGOs said, adding that such rhetoric seeks to meddle in Armenia’s internal affairs ahead of upcoming […]
