Sumgait 1988

An event that took place in the sleepy coastal city of Sumgait 26 years ago still remains an open wound for Armenians. The Sumgait Pogrom was unprecedented in the Soviet Union for its brutality. It changed the nature of what had begun as a peaceful campaign for self-determination by the people of Nagorno Karabakh and marked the beginning of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.
