Hovik Abrahamyan Responds to Kocharyan

“Robert Kocharyan’s opinion that we do not need constitutional change was surprising for me,” announced Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan in a recent interview with NEWS.am. Abrahamyan was discussing former President Robert Kocharyan’s latest interview in which he stated that there was no need for constitutional amendments.

“Of course, I’ve carefully read Robert Kocharyan’s interview. I would honestly like to thank him for congratulating me on being appointed Prime Minister and for appreciating my former work. However, his opinions on whether or not there is a need for constitutional change were surprising for me. It’s clear that all the political parties have been discussing the need for constitutional change for years. Important issues that the country faces today may be productively solved through constitutional reforms,” said Abrahamyan

He continued to state that President Serzh Sargsyan had openly declared his plans to the country without specifying the details of the constitutional reforms. According to the Prime Minister, this was fair, honest and true. Hence other political parties and politicians should follow President Sargsyan’s example by openly and clearly discussing their future plans. “Then we, as a country, can in a short period of time and through constitutional reform truly ensure serious, positive change in our future development,” announced the Prime Minister.

In his interview Robert Kocharyan had also criticized the former government’s economic policies. The newly appointed Prime Minister did not respond to this part of Kocharyan’s interview.
