Ban Ki-moon Urges Sides to Respect Ceasefire Agreement

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his deep concern, adding his voice to statements issued by the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs and other international partners, about the recent upsurge in tension and violence on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border.

The statement issued by Ban Ki-moon’s office on August 4 reads: “The UN urges all parties to respect the ceasefire agreement, refrain from further violence and commit themselves to immediate de-escalation and continuing dialogue in the pursuit of a rapid and peaceful political solution.”

The statement goes on to say: “The Secretary-General expresses his full support for the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and all parties working to resolve this dangerous situation and pursue a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.”

Over the last few days, the situation on the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact has been aggravated. Azerbaijani infiltration attempts were thwarted by Armenian military units. Conditions along the state border between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the northeastern Tavush region of Armenia also deteriorated.

The OSCE, EU, Russia and the United States have also expressed their deep concern about the tense situation in the region.
