The Loss of Der Zor

It is often said that Der Zor is to Armenians what Aschwitz is for Jews. The city was a part of the Ottoman Empire during the Armenian Genocide in 1915, then it became a part of Syria. Today it is an embattled city between Syrian government forces and the "Islamic State." The Armenian Genocide Memorial Church in the city was constructed in the early 90s, to be destroyed during the war in Syria in 2014.
