The Nagorno Karabakh Republic’s Defense Ministry issued a statement on September 6 regarding the escalation of tension in the region.

The statement says that provocative military operations undertaken by the military and political leadership of Baku on the front lines over the past week, both in terms of number and utilization of different calibre military machinery, are being realized to destabilize the situation and move the sides closer to a state of outright war.

The Defense Ministry states that the developments on the Contact Line and the inflammatory statements coming from Baku are a testament to that reality. It goes on to say that the military and political leadership in Azerbaijan is trying to justify its aggression as retaliation against Armenian military operations.

The Defense Ministry states that the use of different calibre artillery and rocket artillery against Armenian front line positions by Azerbaijan is intended to be a show of its military capability, both in tactical and strategic importance.

“The NKR Defense Ministry cautions that the tactics adopted by Azerbaijan’s military and political leadership, will not only be the reason for unjustified and irreversible losses, but rather the continuation of such developments will most likely lead to unpredictable consequences,” the statement reads.

It goes on to say that the military leadership in Karabakh is informing both the defense ministry of Azerbaijan and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs, who are commissioned with negotiating a peaceful solution to the conflict, that responsibility and accountability for any escalation of the situation on the Contact Line and the ensuing consequences will fall squarely on the shoulders of the Azerbaijani side.

Following this statement, the NKR Defense Ministry issued a press release confirming that on September 6, at approximately 1:45 a.m. Narek Harutyunyan (b. 1996), a soldier in the Karabakh Defense Army was killed while serving at a frontline military post along the northern section of the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact. According to the statement it is not clear what the cause of death was, but an investigation has been launched.

Over the past week, as a result of escalation in tensions, the Armenian side has sustained the loss of five soldiers and several injuries to peaceful civilians residing in villages along the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border.
