Chronicles of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Cyber Wars

армянская-кибер-армияArmenian Foreign Affairs Ministry confirmed earlier today that many of the websites of Armenian’s embassies have been suspended temporarily to protect them against an elaborate Azerbaijani Cyber attack.

The cyber war between Armenian and Azerbaijani hackers seems to be a reflection of past events and present developments. Some have even become annual traditions.

Today’s attach coincides with what is know in Azerbaijan as the Black January or the Black Saturday, called so following the Soviet Army crackdown in Baku on January 19–20, 1990 to stop the Baku pogrom directed against the Armenian inhabitants of the city.

In their turn, Armenian hackers attacked and defaced Azerbaijani sites today in memory of Junior Sergeant Armen Hohannisyan, who died in 2014 on this day in the line of duty, when Azerbaijani subversive groups tried to infiltrate into the territory of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. Samvel Martirosyan, social media and information security analyst says this too has become a tradition ever since the Sergeant’s death.

Today, the Armenian Cyber Army also leaked 16K database from Azerbaijani platforms.

According to Samvel Martirosyan, Azerbaijani cyber attacks on Armenian governmental websites were consistent until September of 2009, when the Armenian Government organized an anti hacking division. Martirosyan says, “Today’s Cyber attack is the first serious attach on the Armenian governmental network since 2009”.

According to Samvel Martirosyan, the next calendar cyber attack from Azerbaijan will come around February 25-26; the remembrance days the Khojaly events. As for the Armenian side, it has become customary for Armenian hackers to launch a cyber attach on January 28, which is Armenia celebrates Army Day.
