Arpine Hovhannisyan, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia, former vice speaker of the National Assembly and former Minister of Justice under Serzh Sargsyan’s presidency, announced that she is suspending her membership in the Republican Party.
After ruling the country for decades, the Republican Party was voted out of parliament in last year’s parliamentary election. Hovhannisyan said that she did not want to take on the role of an observer.
“I have not done it before, I will not do it now,” Hovhannisyan said.
She announced that she will join “Davit & Partner” law firm, which specializes in business and investments.
Since 2007, Hovhannisyan has been a lecturer in the Civil Law Department of Yerevan State University.
In an extended Facebook post, Hovhannisyan wrote that she has established a non-governmental organization to oversee the processes taking place in the country.
Hovhannisyan added that the idea to establish an NGO came from the urgent necessity of creating a civil society.
