The Bittersweet Taste of New Year in Garnahovit

CivilNet’s crew traveled to the village of Garnahovit, blanketed in snow during the winter. The village is located at 2150 meters (7,000 ft.) above sea level, near Mount Aragats, the highest peak in Armenia.

Despite the natural beauty of the region, for the residents of Garnahovit, New Year is synonymous with financial anxieties due to high rates of unemployment and harsh living conditions. To ensure a joyful season for their children, parents have to borrow from the banks or rely on remittances from relatives abroad.
