Simone Zoppellaro is an Italian independent journalist. He knows the Caucasus very well and specializes on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. His recent criticism of Azerbaijan’s human rights policies and the conflict with Armenia has put him in hot waters. The Azerbaijani government has threatened him with retribution. Mr. Zoppellaro, who now lives in Germany, talks with CivilNet’s Ani Paitjan about the economic relations between Italy, Azerbaijan and Turkey that led Italy to choose profit instead of addressing human rights issues.

New reports emerge of damage to Armenian heritage in Karabakh

Georgia’s parliament approved the first reading of a bill on “foreign agents” this week, sparking protests in the capital Tbilisi. The proposed law would require media outlets and non-profit organizations that receive over 20% of their funding from abroad to register as entities influenced by foreign sources. As lawmakers deliberated on the legislation, thousands gathered in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi to protest. Critics argue that the legislation could harm Georgia’s long-desired aspirations to become a member of the European Union.
