Armenia: New bill for providing students with military-patriotic education

The Armenian government has developed a military-patriotic education strategy for schoolchildren. The bill, available on e-draft.am, aims to increase the attractiveness of the military as a profession, enhance national values and the sense of protection of the homeland… The project was presented by the Ministry of Education and Science on March 28.

What is the goal of the bill?

The bill aims to ensure harmonious cooperation between the state, community and non-governmental organizations, and to ensure protection of the motherland.

According to the bill, modernization and sustainable development of the military-patriotic upbringing are in line with the modern challenges of the Republic of Armenia.

What are the challenges that Armenia is facing?

This educational strategy aims to solve both external and internal modern challenges faced by Armenia.
At an external level, the challenges are war, blockades, terrorist attacks around the world, especially in neighbouring countries.

At an internal level: The presence of non-willing citizens in the protection of the homeland, indifference to military service and military profession, emigration, slow development of the economy due to the above factors, drug addiction.

Among the internal challenges are also disorder and misbehavior, “sexual degradation as well as other vicious phenomena.”The bill does not explain what is considered as sexual degradation and other vicious phenomena.

The e-draft website allows citizens to vote on the bill until April 14. As of April 5, 59% of the voters have approved the draft decision.
