1915-2015: Der Zor, the Armenian Auschwitz Deprived

Just as Auschwitz has come to symbolize of Holocaust, so too has Der Zor for the Armenian Genocide. It was the final destination for hundreds of thousands of Armenians, forced to march through the arid desert. French-Armenian photographer, Bardig Kouyoumdjian returned to the Syrian desert in 2001 to find any remaining traces and published “Deir Zor: On the Trail of the Armenian Genocide 1915.” Today, Der Zor is in the hands of the Islamic State and the Armenian chapel that sat on sacred ground for the Armenians has been destroyed.
