Levon Aronian Cinches 2015 Sinquefield Cup

Armenian Grandmaster, Armenia’s National Chess Team Leader Levon Aronian is now the sole leader at the 2015 Sinquefield Cup taking place in St. Louis.

Aronian was undefeated during the tournament. On September 1, he competed against Bulgarian Veselin Topalov with blacks and recorded a draw. As a result, the Armenian grandmaster scored 6 points and claimed sole first place in the Sinquefield Cup with an undefeated final score of 6-3.

Aronian registered a draw with the world’s most powerful chess players Norwegian Magnus Carlsen and Indian Viswanathan Anand in St. Louis.

With one more round to go after Monday’s play, Aronian is leading the cup with world champion Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana trailing.

The Sinquefield Cup is being held for the third time, with Aronian having participated in all three tournaments. In 2013 he took the 3rd place and placed 5th in 2014. The tournament prize fund is $300 thousand.

The total purse for the Grand Chess Tour is $1 million.

On the March 2014 FIDE rating list, Grandmaster Levon Aronian was ranked number two in the world and an Elo rating of 2830, making him the fourth highest rated player in chess history. In 2005, Aronian won the Chess World Cup 2005 and let the Armenian national chess team to the gold medal at the Chess Olympics in 2006, 2008 and 2012. Aronian was also the World Rapid Chess Champion in 2009 and the World Blitz Chess Champion in 2010.
