Serzh Sargsyan Leaves for Belarus

President-Serjh-Sargsyani-asulisPresident Serzh Sargsyan is scheduled to make an official visit to Minsk, Belarus today to participate in the CIS summit and the session for the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, reports the president’s press service.The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council session will take place on October 10 where Armenia’s joining the council will be discussed.

On October 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the process of Armenia joining the Eurasian Economic Union is almost completed, while the dialogue with Kyrgyzstan continues.

The Eurasian Economic Council is scheduled to start its work on January 1, 2015. The treaty was signed between the presidents of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan on May 29 in Astana.

The text of the treaty for Armenia to join the EEC was published on September 25.

The decision to join Russia in the Customs Union came as a surprise, when on September 3, 2013, President Sargsyan made the announcement following a meeting with President Putin in Moscow. Armenia had previously been in negotiations with Brussels for three years with the intention of signing the EU Association Agreement.

On October 7, during a press conference, First Deputy Economy Minister Garegin Melkonyan announced that Armenia joining the EEU will not hinder its relationship with the EU. They will continue implementing joint projects with the EU, namely the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which is aimed at boosting export in agribusiness and construction.
