Armenian Villager ‘Dies’ in Azerbaijani Captivity

Karen Petrosyan (b. 1981) of the border village of Chinari accidently crossed the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on August 7 and was captured by Azerbaijani forces. On August 8, Azerbaijani media reported that Petrosyan was found dead due to apparent “acute cardiovascular insufficiency.” CivilNet spoke with the International Committee of the Red Cross Armenian delegation who said that they have been informed of the death and they are in contact with the family. Zara Amatuni, Head of Communication and Prevention Programs at ICRC said, “The ICRC is in confidential dialogue with the relevant authorities regarding the factors associated with this incident. Thereby, the ICRC will not publicly comment on the circumstances.”

During the last 10 days, there has been an upsurge of tensions and ceasefire regime violations along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact and along the international border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Raids and incursion attempts along various parts of the frontline by Azerbaijani armed forces have been successfully thwarted by the Armenian side.

The OSCE, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, Great Britain, the European Union, and the United Nations have all expressed their concerns about the rising tensions on the frontline.
