From Yerevan to Harmony: A Young Man Bridges Cultures and Lives

When 18-year-old Arman went to the United States to study with the FLEX student exchange program for one year, he had visions of Hollywood and big sprawling cities. He ended up in Harmony, Minnesota, a small farming community of about 1000 residents that bills itself as the “Biggest Little Town in Southern Minnesota.” After getting over the initial culture shock, Arman slowly began integrating into American life. His host family, the Syversons with 9 children of their own took him into their home and made him part of their lives. They were so moved by Arman’s stories of Armenia that they decided to take a family trip and for the first time travelled outside of the U.S. to come to Armenia to see how their ‘adopted’ son really lived.
