Tensions High Along Armenia-Azerbaijan State Border

Shots_borderTensions along the Armenia-Azerbaijan state border in the northeastern marz of Tavush and in particular on the Noyemberyan-Ghazakh and Berd-Tovuz sections of the border have been high in recent days. CivilNet reporter Tatul Hakobyan reports from Tavush that on January 6, the Armenian villages of Aygepar, Nerkin Karmiaghpyur and Dovegh have come under heavy Azerbaijani fire from their military positions located in the Azerbaijani villages of Alibeyli and Kemerli. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

Earlier in the day, the press service of the NKR Defense Ministry reported that more than 5000 shots were fired from Azerbaijani positions on the evening of January 5 and the early morning hours of January 6 along the Karabakh-Azerbaijan Line of Contact. The ministry stated that Azerbaijani military forces utilized different caliber weapons, including 60 and 82 mm mortars and RPG-7 grenades.

In response to these ceasefire violations on the Line of Contact, the Armenian side undertook corresponding military operations, killing at least three Azerbaijani soldiers according to the ministry. The tense situation is being monitored by the Armenian Armed Forces along the entire length of the Line of Contact.

A number of Armenian media outlets also reported on January 6 that two Armenian soldiers were killed in those attacks. The Karabakh Defense Army has neither denied nor confirmed that news.
