Սիրիացի ապստամբների անունից ներկայացող խմբի կողմից 2013թ. փետրվարի 9-ին առևանգված Հայր Միքայել Քայալից դեռ որևէ տեղեկություն չկա: Այս մասին ՍիվիլՆեթի հետ զրույցում հայտնեց Հալեպի ազգային առաջնորդարանի մամուլի խոսնակ Ժիրայր Ռեյիսյանը` հավելելով, որ իրենք չգիտեն՝ Հայր Միքայելը ողջ է, թե ոչ:
«Հիմա առևանգված մի քանի հայ կա: Շատ հայեր նախկինում առևանգվել են, սակայն նրանք ազատվել են` փրկագին մուծելով»,- ասաց Ռեյիսյանը: Նա նշեց, որ շատ դեպքերում մարդկանց առևանգում են ոչ թե ապստամբները, այլ ավազակները` փող աշխատելու նպատակով:
Միքայել Քայալին առևանգել են Հալեպից 30 կմ հեռավորության վրա: Առևանգողները կապ են հաստատել Հալեպի Հայ կաթողիկե համայնքի առաջնորդ Պետրոս արքեպիսկոպոս Միրիաթյանի հետ և հայտնել, որ Հայր Միքայելին ազատելու համար Սիրիայի իշխանությունները պետք է սիրիական բանտից անվտանգ դուրս բերեն 15 ապստամբ մարտիկների և 15 մլն սիրիական լիրա (250 հազ. դոլար) փրկագին վճարեն:
2013թ. փետրվարի 20-ին ապստամբները թույլ են տվել Հայր Միքայելին մեկ րոպեով զանգահարել մորը` տեղեկացնելու, որ դեռ ողջ է: Այդ զանգից հետո հայր Միքայելից որևէ տեղեկություն չի ստացվել:
Ներկայում Հալեպի հայ հոգևորականները հիմնադրամ են ստեղծել՝ փորձելով հավաքել պահանջվող գումարը:

On February 9, 2013, Syrian rebels captured Father Michel Kayyal, an Armenian Catholic and Father Maher Mahfouz, a Greek Orthodox. They were captured on the Aleppo-Damascus highway, thirty miles from Aleppo. There has been no information since then about their whereabouts.
Jirair Reisian, a spokesperson for the Armenian prelacy of Aleppo, talked to Civilnet about the case. He said they do not know whether Fr. Michel is still alive or not.
“Currently there are several Armenians who have been taken hostage. Many Armenians were taken hostage in the past, but were released after paying a ransom,” Reisian said.
Reisian added that in many instances hostages were captured not by the rebels but by bandits out to make money.
The kidnappers made contact with Archbishop Boutros Miriati, the head of Aleppo’s Armenian Catholic community, and told him that the Syrian authorities must release 15 imprisoned soldiers, ensuring their safety, and pay 15 million Syrian pounds ($250,000) ransom. Shortly after the kidnapping, Archbishop Miriati told the Agenzia Fides that he has tried to contact tribal leaders in the area where the two priests are believed to be held.
On February 20, the kidnappers allowed Fr. Michel to call his mother for one minute to inform her that he was still alive. There has been no further information about him since then.
A group of Armenian priests from Aleppo have set up a foundation to help raise the required ransom money. A Facebook page has been launched to raise awareness of Fr. Michel’s plight.
